Operator desk note
During the week of August 17 to 23, there was a notable shift in market trends. Volatility and trading volumes decreased in the tech sector, particularly in artificial intelligence and semiconductors, while interest seemed to shift towards biotech and cryptocurrency sectors. This market state change was driven by two major factors: an intervention by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, which created tension in the bond market and subsequently led to buying flows in precious metals and cryptocurrencies, and a meeting at the White House on August 19 between Trump and crypto industry leaders, which triggered a significant short squeeze on Bitcoin and most altcoins.
The upcoming week will be crucial in determining whether a market cycle change is indeed underway. Key events include Nvidia's earnings report on August 26 and Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh's speech at the Jackson Hole symposium on August 28. Depending on the price action, the behavior of U.S. indices, and Bitcoin's consolidation pattern, Volta's portfolio will undergo strategic adjustments. The anticipated strategy, contingent on the coming days' price action, involves reducing exposure to semiconductor, AI memory, and NeoCloud stocks while increasing capital allocation to biotech and cryptocurrencies. This positioning aims to capture a potential medium to long-term upward trend in these sectors.
The biotech sector, in particular, is buoyed by recent news of a successful Phase 3 trial of a melanoma cancer vaccine by Moderna. The market may channel buying flows into the biotech sector, anticipating further advancements of this kind, largely facilitated by artificial intelligence.
