Epoch 23- buyers regain market momentum

Epoch card

Epoch 23, summary card

Operator desk note

The week from September 14 to September 20 marked a significant pivot in favor of buyers. Despite the Clarity Act not passing and the U.S. Federal Reserve increasing interest rates by 25 basis points, cryptocurrencies and U.S. equities quickly regained buying momentum starting Thursday, September 17. The initial bearish reaction halted swiftly, giving way to a relative optimism in the market.

In response to this shift, the Volta portfolio increased its exposure to cryptocurrencies while keeping its exposure to equities and ETFs relatively unchanged. At the start of this week, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, price action remains favorable to buyers. Bitcoin has surpassed the $83,000 mark for the first time in several months, and the NASDAQ has settled more firmly above the 30,000-point threshold. Risk and volatility indicators, such as the VIX, are at annual lows.

Overall, the context is currently risk-on, and the Volta portfolio is considering partial profit-taking at levels above the current price points. The biotech sector is also benefiting from a favorable environment, with faster advancements enabled by artificial intelligence. However, the high interest rates raise questions about the ability of risky assets to sustain such valuation levels over time. Nonetheless, at the beginning of this week, there is a slight easing in interest rates, indicating a temporary relief of market stress. The Volta portfolio will continue to adjust its strategy on a weekly basis.
