Epoch 27- defensive strategy amid market volatility

Epoch card

Epoch 27, summary card

Operator desk note

During the week of October 12 to 18, 2026, the stock market experienced one of its most bearish weeks of the year. The declines were primarily concentrated in the tech, artificial intelligence, semiconductor, and NeoCloud sectors. In contrast, defensive sectors such as financials and healthcare performed relatively well, and Bitcoin also showed resilience. These factors suggest that we may not be on the brink of a more extensive market downturn.

From a technical standpoint, however, the situation is becoming more challenging. The S&P 500 and NASDAQ indices closed the week below key dynamic indicators that had been supporting a long-term upward trend throughout 2026. The recent increase in interest rates raises concerns about the potential long-term impact on certain individual stocks due to the prohibitive cost of borrowing.

Currently, three-quarters of the S&P 500 stocks are more than 20% below their all-time highs, technically placing them in a bear market. The S&P 500 index remains buoyant due to the weighting of the Magnificent Seven, whose performance alone is enough to prevent a significant decline. However, the recent rise in the VIX volatility index necessitates caution. If selling were to extend to the Magnificent Seven, the decline could become more pronounced, affecting both the S&P 500 and NASDAQ indices.

In this environment, Volta's strategy remains defensive until a convincing return of buyers is evident. The fund's cash position remains predominant, allowing for an opportunistic approach should the market enter a more significant downturn. This strategy would enable us to acquire a range of stocks at very attractive average prices based on the past 18 months.

Performance

Net PPS, epoch 27

Over 2026-10-12 → 2026-10-19, net share price printed low 0.967173 and high 1.028856. The largest drawdown from a running intra-week high landed at 6.00%. That is the clearest stress point on the path. Volatility showed up in the band: low to high spanned ~6.00% versus week-open net PPS. Into the last tick, PPS sat meaningfully below week open (≈ -4.23%), a soft weekly finish. Open Performance in the app for the same net PPS basis with full zoom.
